We been have working very hard this year in primary 5 and have covered lots of work so far in term 1. In Literacy we have been developing our understanding of a variety of reading strategies such as summarising, clarifying, visualising and questioning and we have been doing this through our short novels and book extracts. We have also enjoyed visiting the school library each week and picking a book which catches our interest. In writing we have been exploring different genres and have been using VCOP to make our writing more sophisticated. In Numeracy the cubes are currently learning about measure and have been estimating the lengths of a variety of different objects and have also been converting metres and centimetres into centimetres and vice versa. The prisms are learning how to use mental strategies to add and subtract from a number and have been encouraged to discuss and explain the steps they took. The spheres are learning about place value and are developing their understanding of the value of each digit within a number. They have also been using this knowledge to order numbers from largest to smallest. In Social Studies we have been exploring children’s rights and the responsibilities associated with these rights. We are now moving on to plan for our Christmas enterprise project which will be showcased at the Christmas fayre. In Science we have been studying plants and life cycles. In Art we have been working closely with Mrs. Hughes to create pieces of artwork which explore the visual elements and have been experimenting with a variety of media. In Music the majority of the class have been attending the choir weekly with Mrs. Livingston to develop their singing skills and the rest of the class have been working with the music specialist to learn more about musical concepts such as pitch, beat and rhythm. In RE the children have been learning about Mary and the mysteries of the Rosary and throughout the month of November will be learning more about the Saints and remembering people who we loved and who have died.

In Literacy we have been enjoying using our Reciprocal Reading strategies to explore our class novel Divided City. This book has also provided us with lots of health, drama and ICT learning opportunities. We have enjoyed using our new comprehension resource where we have been text marking keywords in the question and the corresponding keywords in the passage. This has helped us to improve our comprehension skills by locating the required information quickly and with greater accuracy. In creative writing we have been writing across a range of genres. Recent pieces have included a writing a balanced argument on topics such as Social Media and School Uniform and a School Report for a Halloween Character.
In Numeracy the Superstars have recently been woring with decimals and percentages. They can identify equivalent decimals, percentages and fractions and order a range of different decimals, fractions and percentages. The Superstars can also find percentages of amounts. The Cool Calculators have been developing their measure and algebra knowledge. They can convert m to cm and vice versa, perform measure calculations and estimate and measure distances using a variety of measuring instruments. For their algebra topic the Cool Calculators can simplify expressions and solve equations to find the value of an unknown letter. Divided have been learning all about fractions. They can identify fractions from shape diagrams, identify equivalent fractions and place fractions in order.
In ICT we have been developing our coding skills using the website code.org.
During the month of November we have been remembering the dead during RE sessions and learning about Scottish Saints.
We are just starting to think about our Christmas Enterprise project and are excited about all the ideas we have so far.
